Three Ways to Prevent Lung Cancer

A Chest XrayAir sustains life, and the quality of the air we breathe can bring serious health conditions, like lung cancer. Lung cancer holds the highest number of recorded deaths in the Unites States, compared to other forms of cancer.

In states such as Utah, Radon testing for homes, reducing air pollutants, and smoking campaigns are some things that the government does to increase awareness and prevention of lung cancer. While the risk of acquiring this disease cannot be avoided, here are three ways you can prevent lung cancer.

Stop Smoking and Avoid Second-hand Smoke

Smoking is responsible for 90% of lung cancers. People who smoke even occasionally have a 15 to 30% chance of getting lung cancer, compared to those who do not. The longer you smoke, the higher the risk of developing the disease.

Quitting smoking, therefore, can lower the risk of developing cancer not only in the lungs but other parts like the mouth, throat, stomach, and colon. If you are a non-smoker, avoid second-hand smoke because exposure to second-hand smoke increases your risk of getting lung cancer to 30%.

Keep your Home Free From Radon

Radon can cause lung cancer. It is the second cause of lung cancer in the US. Radon is an odorless gas from uranium decay in the soil beneath our homes. A high level of radon in homes poses a risk of developing cancer. Radon testing is important to ensure that your house maintains its normal radon levels.

Exercise and Eat Healthy

A healthy diet coupled with moderate amounts of exercise can help prevent lung cancer. Eating fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants can help fight the development of cancer cells.
