Hardwood floors make a home feel cosy. Maintenance is important for them to last. Over time, they tend to lose their sheen, but you can always restore good hardwood.
The most basic maintenance tip is to sweep the floor regularly. Get rid of dust and whatever particles that may scratch the surface. After that, find the natural products that keep your flooring looking new.
Not Water Alone
Don’t use a wet mop when cleaning hardwood floors. Water will seep into the wood and cause it to warp or crack. That’s also why you should immediately wipe off spilt liquids on the floor.
Use a damp mop to clean hardwood floors and get rid of any grime, if any. Add mild liquid detergent to the warm water where you will dip your mop. Sweep the floor first before mopping.
Vinegar and Water
While others don’t recommend using vinegar to clear hardwood floors (because it’s acidic), there are those who’ve had success using white vinegar mixed with warm water as a cleaning agent. It will not remove the floor sheen, provided you use a damp mop or rag.
Don’t worry about the smell of vinegar on your floor. Vinegar evaporates once the floor dries out, but your floor would have been deodorised.
Lemon Juice, Olive Oil
The most natural ingredients that bring back the shine to your Perth home’s wooden flooring are olive oil and lemon juice. Mixed with warm water and white vinegar, all four ingredients will clean the floor, deodorise and polish it. Plus they will not damage the wood.
Put the mixture in a spray bottle and apply it using a rag. Just add some lemon juice to warm water and use either a mop or rag to polish the floor. Others leave out vinegar, but use both olive oil and lemon juice in their mixture.
Floor cleaners made with chemicals and other synthetic ingredients may do a good job of cleaning hardwood floors. But they’re known to contain harsh and hazardous substances that may affect people’s health in the long run. Go natural instead. It’s cheaper and healthier.
