Finding New Approaches to Heating Commercial Establishments and Public Buildings

Reducing Energy ConsumptionWhen it comes to heating and cooling, public buildings and business premises need to take account of energy. In the UK, the public and commercial sectors are some of the largest contributors to the nation’s overall energy costs and carbon footprint.

In line with the clean energy targets and international agreements, building owners and operators should cooperate with the government to create better buildings or find new ways to reduce their energy consumption.

Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, over 55% of the energy used in buildings is for heating. This calls for bigger efforts to find a new approach to public and commercial heating. Over the past few years, the government has been doing its part in implementing stricter regulations.

In a report published by Mitsubishi Electric, more than 5000 organisations in the UK are part of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC), a scheme that provides financial incentives to organisations that reduce their carbon and fines for those that don’t. The CRC scheme also affects non-member organisations through Energy Performance Certificates.

Finding a New Approach

Whilst these legislations and energy requirements are taking effect in the commercial sector, the government is set to enforce the use of renewable technologies. There are even strong incentives for organisations that adopt renewable and low-carbon solutions.

This initiative is also changing the face of the construction sector, as suppliers and manufacturers of construction materials and heating technologies are doing their part in improving commercial heating. Contour, for example, has been improving the heating efficiency of LST radiators and aluminium coping products engineered to keep more heat within the premises.

Apart from on-site renewable technologies, buildings will also benefit from low-cost materials that enable energy efficiency and maintain comfortable environments. Whilst there are no easy solutions to reducing the carbon emissions of the public and commercial sectors, many remarkable improvements have been made.
